After the total closure of the “formalized corridor” over the Western Balkans in March 2016, the situation faced by (transit-)migrants in the region has changed drastically. Fences and surveillance equipment, massive police and military presence at the borders, regular and often violent push-backs led to many refugees stuck especially in Serbia, but also in other countries of the region. The Summer School addresses this new situation by focusing on four modules: New reception facilities and detention centres (1), new forms of mobility and governing mobility (2), transformations in NGO/activist politics and humanitarian support (3)  and is finally asking, how these dimensions are inscribed in the European Border Regime, increasing characterized by bufferzoning, immobilization and forced mobility (4). Each module will be led by renowned scholars of migration and border studies, in addition to presentations from representatives of civil society and visits to migration-relevant sites in Belgrade.

The Summer School is a joint project of the University of Göttingen, Department of Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology (Germany), the Research Centre of the Academy of Sciences and Arts (Slovenia), the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research (Croatia) and the Institute of Ethnography SASA (Serbia). It is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service with funds from the German Federal Foreign Office. The travel costs, accommodation and food will be covered. Applications are welcome from students, PhD students and post-docs studying/working in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia, Hungary, Bulgaria as well as from German students, PhD students and post-docs researching on migration to/through the Western Balkans.

Applicants are requested to hand in a short cover letter (max. one page), especially indicating motivation for participation and research interests, a CV and if available, a publication list. Until the end of June 2018, the applicants will receive a message, if participation is possible.

Please send your application until 15th June 2018 to: contact[at]summerschool2018.eu
